Canada Tariff Update for US Brands Shipping Crossborder

Update on tariffs

Canada has announced plans to impose additional retaliatory tariffs on certain U.S.-origin products beginning September 8, 2026.

For U.S.-based brands shipping ecommerce orders to Canadian consumers, the important factors will be the product’s country of origin and HS classification.

The complete list of affected products and tariff rates has not yet been released, but Canada has indicated that targeted sectors may include steel, dairy, agricultural equipment, paper, electronics, and other products.

Based on similar Canadian tariff actions in 2025:

• Only specifically designated HS codes were impacted

• The additional tariffs generally applied to U.S.-origin goods

• Products manufactured outside the U.S. were generally not affected simply because they shipped from the U.S.

• The impact varied significantly depending on product mix

Separately, the U.S. implemented new tariffs on certain Canadian imports on August 22. The larger consideration for U.S. ecommerce brands will be Canada's response and how it could affect U.S.-origin products moving to Canadian consumers.

For brands using APC LandIT!, applicable tariffs will be incorporated into landed-cost calculations as the new requirements become effective.

APC Postal Logistics will continue monitoring developments as Canada releases the affected HS codes and final tariff structure.
